World Junior - Relay

The relay day was a fun day. The relay was 4 times 5km, and our team consisted of; 1-Graeme Killick, 2-Jess Cockey, 3-Ghislain De Laplante, and 4-me. The first two legs where in classic and the last two in skate. Graeme got our team off to a great start and tagged off the Jess in 2nd place. Jess tagged off to Ghislain in 11th spot, Ghislain held his position and tagged off to me in 11th. It's not often that we race 5km races and I didn't really know how to pace myself for that distance of race. In the end I got a little too excited and started a little too hard. Right off the start there is a big, steep climb where most of the Canadian cheering squad was. As I passed by them they got me pretty pumped up and I hop-skated the whole way up really fast. But once I got to the top, I started to fill up with lactic acid and started to bog down. But I soon got into a good rhythm and slowly started to catch the fading French and Austrian team. On the last big downhill, the Austrian fell, and I passed him on the downhill and also caught the French team. Right at the bottom of the downhill I passed the French skier in a free skate and held both the French and Austrian team until the finish line and our team ended up placing 9th, which was exactly where we were ranked going into the race.

Overall the World Junior Champs were a success for me. I was a little disappointed with some of the results, but for the most part, I raced well and was happy with how things played out.

I am now in Austria preparing for two weeks of OPA Cup races in Germany and Italy.
