School Challenge day

Yesterday I help Cross Country Yukon with the annual School Challenge Day on March 25th. There were close to 200 kids from grades 4-7 participating and they were separated into smaller groups and each group visited 14 different stations. The kids practiced their downhill techniques, did balance activities and maneuvered through various obstacles on skis. There were some good crashes and laughs. This year there was two new additions to the circuit: a blind skiing exercise and a sit-skiing. These stations were aimed at providing awareness for Para-Olympic skiers. My job for the day was to be one of the “group leaders”. I had a group of 13 kids from various elementary schools and helped them learn and have fun throughout the day. I would take them from station to station and demonstrate the exercise, then help them as they made their way through the exercise on their own.
Overall yesterday was a really fun day, and I think that it really provided a great learning experience for lots of kids and was an important step for Cross Country Yukon to take in order to keep the number of young cross country skiers in the territory at an all time high.
