I didn’t really know what to expect from myself going into the races at Nationals two weeks ago. I hadn’t been racing very fast the past month leading up to Nationals and a week before the races in Canmore I found out that I had had pneumonia and my body was still trying to fight it off...but in the back of my mind I knew that there is always a chance that I might be able to get over it and still have a couple good races at Nationals to finish the season off.
I think the races did go a little better than they had been going the past month, but I was still nowhere near my personal expectations. All the races sort of went the same. I didn’t feel sick at all, and I was able to push myself, but it never felt right. I never felt as though I could find that top gear that you need to go fast, and I didn’t feel that i was recovering as fast as I normally do in the easier sections of the race course.
So I guess Nationals had its ups and downs. Even though I wasn’t racing as fast as I wanted to, I think my results weren’t too bad given the circumstances.
In terms of actual results, I was:
7th in the skate team sprint with John Parry
15th in the 10km skate
14th in the 15km classic
17th in the classic sprint
21st in the 50km skate
So now this year’s ski season has come to an end, and I’m exited and motivated to get a fresh start at a new year. I will again be back with the Pierre Harvey Training Center in Quebec for this coming season and am looking forward to some good quality training with the team this summer!
