This past week I finally started feeling good enough to race, not 100% but at least I no longer had a fever during the night and could start to breath through my nose. This past weekend there was a three stage mini “tour” style ski race in Forni di Sopra, Italy. Friday was a classic sprint, Saturday a 10km classic and Sund
ay a pursuit start 15km skate from Saturday’s race. All the times from the three races were combined to crown one overall winner.
Alright, so the sprint race was a classic race but the course was pretty flat so most of us decided to double pole it with skate skis. It felt weird for me to race since it had been a long time since I had even done a full intensity workout never mind a real race…but nerveless I felt comfortable with my double poling abilities. The qualifier went well for me except for one part. There was a short, steep uphill halfway around the course that I didn’t approach very well. I started to herringbone too early and I’m not sure why but I tried to go back into double poling right in the middle of the steepest part of the hill once I had lost all my momentum and really struggled to get over the top. In the end I qualified 31st, 0.6 seconds
out of the top 30, so my day ended there.
Saturday’s 10km Classic race. Right from the start I felt bad, tried legs, not much energy. This was defiantly the hardest, most painful race for me so far this year. My result wasn’t good but it was better than I thought it was going to be, I finished 27th Open Men.
Sunday’s 15km Skate wasn’t so good either. I felt the same symptoms as the day before, tired legs no energy, but this time I didn’t place as well as the day before. I think I finished 42nd….
I’m hoping that this past weekend was just because that I haven’t done enough racing the last couple weeks and I wasn’t in good enough race shape, so maybe this is what I needed, a good hard weekend of tough racing to get me back into s
hape and ready for next week!
I’m now in St-Martin, Italy, getting ready for another OPA city sprint race this Friday!
All for now,
David
