One more weekend of racing done. This past weekend was the start of the Canadian racing circuit’s Nor-Am races.
The first race was a classic 1,600m sprint. Being the first race of the season I didn’t really know what to expect but the qualifier ended up going well and I placed 5th. The heats were a little more tricky since I was using skis that were pretty stiff, so I was struggling to make them kick on the uphills but they were fast on the downhills. But I made it through my quarter and semifinal ok and ended up 5th in the “A” final. So I was happy with a 5th place finish, not a bad way to start the season off for me.
The next race was a 15km individual skate race. This race didn’t go as well as the sprint did…Right off the start of the race I knew that I wasn’t feeling in top shape. The night before the race we got about 15cm of snow and another 5cm or so fell during the race, which made for some pretty soft skiing conditions. The race was pretty slow and hard for me, and I finished in 22nd position. For some reason I’ve never had a good distance race in Silverstar, I think it’s because it’s the first race of the season and I need to race a couple more races to get myself in good race shape.
So hopefully the races this coming weekend in Rossland will go a bit better.
Here are a couple pictures of me during the sprint taken by Jesse Winter:
