First camp of the year

I guess I’m about due for an update! So far my summer has been going really good. I’ve been able to spend a little more time at home and have been taking advantage of it by spending lots of time out at our cabin, boating, hiking and lots of fishing! There is always a lot of stuff to do around Whitehorse if you like the outdoors!

We (the CNEPH ) had our first official team training camp in Canmore, Alberta a couple weeks ago. This was just a dryland training camp, no skiing up at the glacier this year. While we were there there was still too much snow to get up to the glacier! (and it’s getting more and more expensive to ski up there each year...) It was a 10 day camp for me, lots of hiking, running and roller skiing.

I lot of people seem to ask me why we do this, why do we go all the way to Canmore when I can roller ski and run right here in Whitehorse? Well it’s because it’s nice to have a change of pace and mix it up sometimes. While training is good in Whitehorse and Quebec, sometimes you get stuck in a rut where it seems like you’re just doing the same things over, and over again, and it’s not very exciting or motivating. Sometimes it’s good to go somewhere else and ski on new roads, run on new trails and lift weights in a new gym. It keeps you on your toes and makes training a little more fun. Another reason is because on training camps everyone is on the same schedule. Sometimes in Quebec some of your teammates might not live very close to you or might have a slightly different training schedule than you and you end up doing your training alone. On training camps everyone stays in the same place and does the same trainings everyday so you’re always training with a big group of people, which is a lot more motivating than training alone.

The training camp went well and I got some good quality training hours done. I’m now back in Whitehorse until early August, when I fly down to Quebec to meet up with the team!

Here are two pictures from one of our hikes near Canmore:
