Last week we (the YES and I) wrapped up our training camp with the APU (Alaska Pacific University) ski team in Alaska. Our week up on the Eagle Glacier was awesome. We got tons of good quality skiing in and had a great time hanging out and getting to know the APU team. The facilities they have set up on the glacier are superb. We’ve trained on many different glaciers around the world and the Eagle is now on top of our list. They have a big “house” right on the glacier with running water, hot showers, a sauna, full kitchen, laundry facilities, several bedrooms, strength training equipment and even a big screen TV in the lounging room! They have two full size groomers which groom twice a day, so the ski trails are always in top shape. The trails are just a 50 meter walk from the front door and there is about an 8km loop. Since the glacier is at relatively low elevation (1,900 meters), doing intensity is no problem. This is really nice because it allows us to do some training at race pace to help us better prepare for the racing season. A normal day up on the glacier would look something like this:
-get up at 6:45AM, eat breakfast
-go for a two and half hour skate ski in the morning
-eat lunch, have a nap
-go for a two hour classic ski with some core strength afterwards
-eat supper, review some technique video from the day’s trainings
-go to bed
-wake up and do it all again!
Here are some pictures from the trip:
